What is ETRM Software?

ETRM (Energy Trading & Risk Management) Software refers to software applications used by energy trading companies to manage their business processes. ETRM software encompasses a range of functions depending on the types of energy commodities being traded and the individual functional requirements of a particular trading business. Modern ETRM Software typically includes the following standard functionality; trade capture and management, physical operations (logistics), financial settlement, risk management, decision support and reporting tools. On top of this vendors may also provide industry specific functionality such as terminal inventory management, freight tools and commodity specific quality management tools. Typical ETRM Software users include commodity traders, manufacturing businesses or trade finance providers.

What is Multi-Commodity CTRM/ETRM Software?

ETRM software is designed to support companies trading numerous types of commodities such as Oil, Refined Products, LNG, LPG, Fertiliser, Power, Plastics, etc. Whilst several vendors claim to offer multi-commodity solutions they are often just traditional crude oil trading systems adapted to handle different energy commodity types which means they can often be lacking in functionality. A true multi-commodity ETRM solution, such as Fendahl’s Fusion ETRM is built from the ground up to handle multiple commodity types and to support the different energy trade types and business processes required. Most modern ETRM/CTRM systems cover the following main commodity groups: –

Agricultural Commodities (Softs)

  • Cocoa
  • Coffee
  • Cotton
  • Dairy
  • Cereals (Wheat, Barley, etc.)
  • Palm Oil
  • Rubber
  • Soy Beans
  • Sugar

Metals/Raw Materials

    • Base Metals

    – Aluminium
    – Copper
    – Lead
    – Nickel
    – Steel
    – Tin
    – Zinc

    • Metal Products
    • Precious Metals

    – Gold
    – Palladium
    – Platinum
    – Silver

    • Raw Materials

Energy

  • Coal
  • Crude Oil
  • Bunker
  • Electricity
  • Natural Gas
  • LNG
  • Emissions
  • Fuel

Does ETRM/CTRM Software Manage Financial Accounting?

ETRM Software is not an accounting tool but should be designed to integrate with most modern accounting platforms. Modern ETRM Systems such as Fusion CTRM Software are designed to be integrated quickly and cost effectively to all major accounting platforms enabling data to be pulled or pushed from either the accounting system or the CTRM system. Some older CTRM systems will require data to be entered manually or uploaded via spreadsheet which can be costly and inefficient.
